Track Record 1: Google – Virtual PPA supports Google’s data center operations
Shizen Energy Inc. and Google have signed a long-term virtual Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a utility-scale solar project in Japan.
Under this PPA, Google will receive the associated environmental attribute certificates generated by the new 20 megawatts (MW) AC project being developed by Shizen Energy and its partner on a former golf course located in the same power grid as Google’s data center in Inzai City, Chiba prefecture.
This project, one of the first PPAs Google has signed in Japan, will support the operations of its data center in Inzai and is a key milestone toward the goal of having all Google-operated grids running on carbon-free energy 24/7 by 2030.
Construction of the new solar power plant to be built under the PPA is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed in 2027.
